Note:
There is no lecture on Wed 20 Feb.
In a series of ten lectures, the University of Edinburgh's Professor Simon Frith — a former rock critic and author of several books about popular music — discusses British musical culture between 1955 and 2005. Each lecture focuses on a different approach to the subject, and topics of discussion cover the technological evolution of music, the importance of musical institutions, the transformation of the record industry and the role of music in forming identity. Suitable for sociologists, curious minds and music geeks alike, this series of lectures is essential to understanding how music has shaped society during the last 50 years.
