Luis Buñuel, Salvador Dalí's former schoolmate and collaborator, is heralded as the father of surrealist film. Though his early years were spent breaking the boundaries of cinematic convention, Buñuel's career was marked by both commercial and artistic success. This comprehensive tribute begins with Belle de Jour (1967), the tale of a housewife-turned-prostitute starring the sultry Catherine Deneuve. Other treats include the Spanish director's fantastic satire of middle-class existence, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972), the utterly bizarre and often hilarious The Phantom of Liberty (1974) and his final film, That Obscure Object of Desire (1977), which features Fernando Rey as an aging businessman whose advances are spurned by a scheming maid.
