Complex mob-flick Gomorrah shows the realities and ironies that many conventional mafia films only romanticise. The drama, based on Robert Saviano's non-fiction account of Neapolitan life, splits into five stories and demonstrates how "the system" corrupts every strata of society: 13-year-old Toto is drawn into a life of crime; Marco and Ciro illustrate the fate of wannabe gangsters; Roberto skewers a Naples education; and bagman Don Ciro shows how not even the old escape. Even the film's title is a play on words — the Camorra family name is akin to that of the Biblical city destroyed by God for its wickedness and vice.
