With a set akin to Neil Buchanan's Art Attack, choreographer Tiago Guedes challenges traditional approaches to dance performances in the UK premiere of Various Materials. Hosted by the Place as part of contemporary festival Dance Umbrella 2008, the piece disputes preconceived conventions associated with modern movement pieces by creating — and consequently destroying — a landscape for his audience with a pair of scissors, newspapers, tape and sheets of blue plastic. The temporary statement, consisting of gesticulations and these everyday objects, is subjected to closer scrutiny when Guedes appears in a Meet the Artist exclusive following the 14 October show.
