It goes without saying that David Tennant is marvellous as the student prince — melancholy, hyperactive and witty in equal measure — but he's not the best thing about this RSC adaptation. Neither is a gloriously malevolent Patrick Stewart as Claudius. Nor is a scene-stealing Oliver Ford Davies, whose interpretation of Polonius is peppered with senior moments and provides much of the humour of the piece. No, the real star is the production itself: from the mirrored set and torches of the opening ghost scenes to the luxe glamour of Gertrude's bedroom, director Gregory Doran and designer Robert Jones' staging is a triumph.
