You could say that Stephen Walter — famous for his Similands maps of Britain — is a cartographer. And yet, these maps are nothing like any you've seen before. Ordnance Survey symbols and contours are replaced with a myriad of miniscule houses, trees and tower blocks, punctuated by a witty narrative that picks out famous residents or local landmarks in the capital. A crudely drawn snake represents the Serpentine, a rugby ball surrounded by pints indicates Twickenham and three sinister black dogs circle Barking. It all makes The Island: London Series an insightful, if slightly bonkers, take on the city's many different personalities.
