Art The Camden Town Group

Unlike Hawley Arms' caners Winehouse, Fielding and Geldof, this Camden Town Group was a collective of realist painters working in the borough during the early 20th century. Much like their modern day geographical counterparts, however, the core artists — including Spencer Gore, Robert Bevan and ringleader Walter Sickert — were intrigued by fashion, sex and urban living, and their pictures reflect the changing face of life in the capital at the time. Sickert's vast oeuvre, for example, comprises many nudes painted in less than salubrious surroundings. Incidentally, he has consequently been linked to the unsolved Camden Town murder of 1908.
