For his second solo exhibition at Rokeby, Simon Keenleyside explores the conceptual boundaries of landscapes by examinging the locales around his Essex home. Although many of his paintings take abandoned or disused sites (asylums, factories, utility buildings) as inspiration, the artist injects the somewhat bleak scenes with arresting colours — often rendering them hyperreal. Take a Trip on a Magic Carpet, for example, depicts the perfectly square form of stacked shipping containers with vibrant, punchy tones and subtle, daubed lettering.
