Fresh from the African Pavilion of the 2007 Venice Biennale, New York-based Chilean artist Alfredo Jaar arrives at the South London Gallery. Politics of the Image includes five major works manifesting his ongoing engagement with Africa. Jaar's first film, Muxima, uses a popular Angolan folk song to narrate the nation's recent history. Jaar also exhibits three series of diverse photographic works of Africa and the powerful installation The Sound of Silence. Stemming from an image of a famine victim, the installation explores the relationship between documentary photography and suffering, and in turn the West's responsibility to Africa.
