As with his 2005 tragicomedy The Squid and the Whale, director Noah Baumbach focuses on a dysfunctional intellectual family for this considerably darker feature. We meet embittered writer Margot, played by a revelatory Nicole Kidman as all snark and floppy hats. She's travelling with her eccentric son, Claude (Zane Pais), to her childhood home to see her estranged, free-spirited sister Pauline (Jennifer Jason Leigh) wed hapless slacker Malcolm (brilliantly overplayed by Jack Black). Despite touching on difficult topics such as autism and child abuse, the well-paced script, unconventional editing and faultless performances make for an enjoyable, if occasionally uncomfortable, watch.
