Art Gdansk: Polish Lives Found in Translation

For the first installment of the Jerwood: Found in Translation series, Polish filmmaker Marta Michalowska presents four films that encapsulate the history of her hometown, Gdansk. The simple pieces find friends and family lending their stories, their often-humorous accounts creating a picture of a city bound by the fear and the uncertainty of Poland's communist period. With monochrome photographs of the Gdansk shipyard — the flashpoint of the country's rise from communism — as a backdrop, the filmic quartet is as much a personal history as a commentary on a nation's experience. Fellow Polish citizen Ilona Sekacz provides the scores.
