Art: Architecture/Design China Design Now

Celebrating China's return to the graphic-art world stage, China Design Now embarks on a three-part journey along the country's coastline. The cities examined — Shenzhen, Shanghai and Beijing — each represent a key temporal and stylistic facet. While Shenzhen's transformation from fishing village to industrial monolith has birthed a burgeoning youth-art movement, Shanghai harnesses its rich cultural past (it was known in the 1920s as the "Paris of the East") for its consumer-driven urban middle class. This nostalgia contrasts with Beijing, the hyper-modern city of the future, whose grand architecture symbolises China's next steps.
