Music: Global Buraka Som Sistema

Over in Lisbon, you can forget baile funk or dubstep — the hottest street sounds right now are all about kuduro. These insistent booty beats originated from the war-torn African nation of Angola (a Portuguese province until 1975), but have since been given a full-on ghetto-tech makeover by Buraka Som Sistema, Lisbon's leading innovators in the genre. Though they've only released one single here — last year's "Yah!" on Modular Recordings — the band are set for much bigger things in 2008, with a collaboration with M.I.A. already cut and the politically charged album Black Diamond on the way. Their seven-strong live show, including acrobatic dancers and expert MCs, radiates near-nuclear energy.
