Performing Arts: Opera La Scala Opera Series: Aida

With tickets often going for upwards of £1,000 and shows selling out within hours of going on sale, it's unlikely that very many of us will ever have the privilege of experiencing a night at the opera at Milan's legendary La Scala. Thank goodness for the Rio, which (in the slightly less salubrious surrounds of Dalston) is offering the chance to see the famed house's production of Aida, as directed by Franco Zeffirelli. The show was a huge hit, but became infamous when, on opening night, a booing crowd caused tenor Roberto Alagna to storm off stage mid-aria, leaving his understudy to finish the first act in jeans.
