Forget brash synths and angular electro — the latest '80s revival is New Jack Swing, which comes complete with enough silly fashion accessories and cheesy motifs to encourage any neon nu-raver to get down with the sounds of the street. Harking back to Bobby Brown's pre-Whitney days (when he had only just left New Edition), Swingbeat combines the edgy urban beats of hip-hop with the soulful sounds of R&B. Brush up your high-top fade and dust off your suspender overalls for a screening of House Party (1990) and Do the Right Thing (1989), with plenty of Teddy Riley songs courtesy of Patchwork Pirates and DJ Gigolo "The Mixx" Knight.
