Weaving complex tales about love, loss and all that lies between, troubadour Jason McNiff — who MOJO hailed as "one of the UK's best-kept secrets" — plays this evening at the Apple Tree's fortnightly Come Down and Meet the Folks series. Armed with a well-plucked guitar and joined by bandmates Steve Brookes (drums) and Graham Knight (bass and piano), the Irish-Polish singer/songwriter recalls Americana, folk and roots without ever descending into formulaic acoustic drudgery. With a knack for the unpredictable, McNiff cultivates a tangible tension, dragging his audience — not unwillingly — into his elaborate songs.
