Performing Arts: Theatre V Jay Theatre Productions present Streets Paved with Gold

Victor Richards' one-man show explores the migration of Caribbean workers to London in the '50s, when thousands left their island homes to try to improve their lives with the salaries and working conditions advertised by employers such as the NHS and London Transport. Richards renders the fascinating history of this move, and the subsequent experience of black British citizens, all the more poignant by concentrating on the story of one man: Augustus Cleveland Johnson's search for a better life finds him in a city where, like a latter-day Dick Whittington, he believed the proverbial streets would be paved with gold.
