Performing Arts: Theatre Lies Have Been Told

The late Robert Maxwell — MP, media baron and (alleged) fraudster — tells his side of the story in this acclaimed one-man show, back in London after a successful West End run in 2006. Philip York brilliantly channels Maxwell, barking and bawling his way through his portrait's army service, successful business and media career and ultimate downfall and death (rumours of suicide and murder still continue). Maxwell is portrayed as a megalomaniacal, terrifying bully; yet, despite this, it's hard not to feel a tinge of sadness toward a man who was always troubled and, perhaps, doomed from the start.
