Performing Arts: Theatre An Enemy of the People

Rebecca Lenkiewicz's adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's An Enemy of the People skillfully transfers the play's explorations of greed and small-town politics to the modern-day context of big business and ruthless capitalism. Ibsen styled the lead character, Dr Stockman — played here by RSC actor Greg Hicks — on his own experience in defying social hypocrisy when his earlier play Ghosts caused a public outcry, due to its veiled reference to syphilis. The performance sees Ibsen's social critique at its sharpest, with the memorable statement that "the strongest man in the world is the man who stands most alone" remaining ever relevant.
