This festival is not only a chance to see cutting-edge independent cinema but also a celebration of the East End's cultural creativity. A gala screening of Roger Goldby's debut feature, The Waiting Room, starring Ann Marie-Duff, kicks off the proceedings. Interspersed between animations and shorts are workshops for aspiring filmmakers and Q&A sessions with prominent industry professionals, including London-born composer Michael Nyman. Look out for Ulrich Seidl's gritty Import/Export, which launches this year's "East Meets East" section of the festival, devoted to exploring political and social issues in Eastern Europe.
