If what you recall of Punch and Judy includes soggy fish 'n chips, ice cream and hazy summers in Blackpool, best proceed to the Young Vic with caution. The theatre celebrates not the puppet show itself, but the 40th anniversary of Harrison Birtwistle's controversial opera based on the popular characters. In Birtwistle's dark and violent re-imagining, a bloodthirsty Punch commits murder most foul, all the while lusting after the idealistic Pretty Polly. The complex and jagged score — perfectly complemented by Daniel Kramer's direction — enthralls with its explicit brutality and uncompromising artistry.
