Shakespeare's most tragic of tragedies was in the limelight last year with the RSC's production starring Sir Ian McKellen. For the Globe's version, highly regarded theatre and television actor David Calder steps into the role of the proud monarch and father driven to madness by his daughter's honesty. Liverpool Nativity's Jodie McNee is a suitably fragile-looking but feisty Cordelia, while Kellie Bright and Sally Bretton play the unsympathetic elder siblings. Few dramatic experiences in London are as atmospheric as watching Shakespeare in these galleried surroundings, and Lear is a heart-wrenching play, so expect an emotional evening.
