In contrast to Anton Corbijn's stylistic monochrome masterpiece Control (2007), Grant Gee's straightforward colour account of seminal Manchester band Joy Division could be interpreted as a factual jump onto the bandwagon. However, Gee's deft use of rare archival footage and forthright interviews with the band and their contemporaries makes this documentary all the more compelling. Suicidal singer Ian Curtis' demons and the socioeconomic turmoil of late-'70s Manchester are detailed in firsthand narratives, and the frank reportage creates a powerful, turbulent portrait of the man and the times. Following the screening, Joy Division drummer Stephen Morris and punk biographer Jon Savage answer questions in person.
