Some may spend their gap year soul-searching (that is, aimlessly wandering the globe or lolling about in a drunken stupor). But when Ryan Gander took a year off from exhibiting, he spent it creating Heralded as the New Black, a series of exclusive works currently residing in the South London Gallery. With an array of installations and films, Gander recreates and fictionalises history in his art to explore the ideas surrounding copyright, intellectual property and documentation. The injection of self-deprecating humour gives the project some welcome levity — but doesn't take away from the insightful and accessible finished product.
