When writer Joan Didion's husband died suddenly at the end of 2003, in the midst of their only daughter's hospitalisation with an unknown, life-threatening illness, Didion began keeping the diary that would become her award-winning memoir The Year of Magical Thinking. For her, recording the day-to-day struggle between despair and disbelief was the only way she could bear the grief. Didion later adapted her book for the stage, making it a must-see production on Broadway last year. The personal meditation on mourning and loss makes for a bleakly moving one-woman monologue, starring Vanessa Redgrave under the illuminating direction of David Hare.
