Art Luke Kendall: The Great Sparrow Campaign

Luke Kendall shifts his focus from the dainty creatures of the Lepidopterist art collective to a more engaged study of humanity. The Great Sparrow Campaign pulls its name from Mao Zedong's Great Leap Forward — which resulted in millions of deaths through famine — and examines our society's obsession with control and order. Kendall's large-format paintings depict a mistrust of institutional authority and rail against humans' encroachment on their surroundings. The Foundations represents mankind with cylindrical, metallic forms featuring grotesque, puppet-like faces. These figures nonchalantly steal the earth beneath our feet in a stylised interplay of the possessive, destructive nature of the modern world.
