More Flavor: City GemBathing the Buddha

Preposterous as it might seem, there's an opportunity to come over all zen-like in the gardens of Leicester Square. This rare slice of peace and tranquility in the bustling heart of the West End comes care of London Fo Guang Shan Temple, which celebrates Buddha's birthday with a yearly festival, at the centre of which lies this cleansing ceremony. Said to improve inner balance and purify sins, the ritual invites all to bathe scattered Buddha statues with fragrant water before the monks depart, and the Square returns to its normal, unenlightened state.
