The bicentenary of the prince of dark literature, Edgar Allen Poe, marks a central concern in the work of the two artists on display in Mare Tenebrarum — named for the "Sea of Darkness" Poe often referenced in his writing. Katharine Tulloh projects barren cityscapes, disjointed props and protagonists through mirrors to create fragmented, fluid images that she then photographs and reprojects. Gary McDonald's paintings also make the fragmented id a key fulcrum for his personal interior landscapes, while both artists meditate on Poe's twin gothic themes of death and decay as passageways into artistic escape.
