In Tovarisch, I am not dead, documentarian Stuart Urban turns his camera on his father, Garri Urban. The elder man escaped the Holocaust, the Gulag, and the KGB, uttering the film's titular comment just before hitting his captor in the head while trying to flee Stalinist Russia. Urban struggles to understand his father's history as he interviews the fierce Noka Kapranova (his father's onetime lover) and tramps through the former Soviet Union looking for Garri's missing KGB file. The resulting documentary is a portrait of an extraordinary survivor with an intriguingly shady past.
