Art Tom Milnes: Deep Relaxation

Tom Milnes uses his residency at the Gallery Studio to cultivate a strange collection of "culturally redundant audio material". Walkmen, new-age music, and relaxation tapes fill the gallery space; the tapes themselves are draped around the room like crèpe paper, while their audio components are layered on top of each other, creating noisy, patterned loops. Despite their original use, the layered sound — an awkward blend of squawks, panpipes and ocean waves — creates a decidedly uneasy atmosphere. Through this uncomfortable mashup, Milnes examines consumer society's obsession with technology and its concomitant wastefulness.
