Art Gail Pickering

Artist and filmmaker Gail Pickering isn't one to shy away from haphazard influences, as her current show at Gasworks proves. In her film Hungary! and Other Economies, she takes her inspiration from the Marquis de Sade's old chateau and the retro-futuristic creations of designer Pierre Cardin. Pickering has also worked with porn actors and bodybuilders, and performed herself at the Tate Modern in a living installation, Zulu. Her Dissident Sunset takes an equally distinctive approach, drawing on historical photographs and anthropological research into ritual. Whatever the source, Pickering's works are as brain-teasing as they are distinctive.

Note: To coincide with her Gasworks exhibition, Pickering presents a commissioned performance at the South London Gallery on Thur 26 June.
