Art Chantal Joffe

Chantal Joffe exhibits at the Victoria Miro Gallery with a series of cheeky — quite literally — canvas paintings. The British artist, who received the 2006 Royal Academy of Arts Charles Wollaston Award, once again embraces loony caricature in her expressive and sexually charged studies of female figures. Challenging the established social opinion of such visuals, Joffe's style and subjects are informal and reckless, conveying a contradictory jumble of sentiments, all at once sincere, corrupt, artificial and innocent. The artist's ludicrously jubilant tone is underpinned by a slight air of menace, making for an intriguing viewing experience.
