Huang Yong Ping's first exhibition in the UK is a satirical diatribe inspired by the Frolic, the flagship vessel of the British opium trade. A leading figure of the Xiamen Dada movement, Ping crafts surrealist work that blends contemporary Western culture with China's rich philosophical heritage. These provocative sculptures address the history of the period while commenting on the scandals of our current globalised society — enlarged drug paraphernalia is juxtaposed with totemic symbols of far-flung conflict, including a giant figure of Lord Palmerston puffing an opium pipe.
