Art: Photography Ruth Orkin

Ruth Orkin wryly described her half-century love affair with the camera as "making people look at what I want them to look at". The daughter of silent-film actress Mary Ruby, Orkin was raised in Hollywood, but moved to New York in her 20s, where she briefly worked as a nightclub photographer before quickly moving on to snapping renowned musicians and other famous figures for newspapers and magazines. It was while traveling in Europe, however, that Orkin captured the image that made her name: 1951's American Girl in Italy. The iconic photograph features alongside other Orkin works in this retrospective, which was co-curated by the artist's own daughter.
