Damian Elwes presents a series of portraits that do more than just represent a person on canvas. The artist depicts the studios (sans inhabitants) of major 20th-century painters in the style of the given artist, creating a fantasy world in which Dalí's studio floats on the ocean and Picasso's workspace is made of cubist building blocks. Using the information gathered from studying the artists and visiting the locales, appropriating styles and focusing on the light, colour and composition of the items in the spaces, Elwes paints a very different sort of portrait indeed.
