Performing Arts: Theatre The Chalk Garden

Enid Bagnold's dark comedy The Chalk Garden kicks off tonight at Donmar Warehouse's not-for-profit theatre. Bagnold, best known for penning Elizabeth Taylor vehicle National Velvet, used her own rambling manor in Rottingdean, Sussex, as the setting for the tale of 16-year-old Laurel, her eccentric grandmother and the mysterious governess who infiltrates their dysfunctional, unruly household. The deliciously bitter drama — which received the Hollywood treatment in 1964 with Hayley Mills and the Oscar-nominated Dame Edith Evans — is a timeless study of the ongoing fracas of the family unit.
