Sons and Daughters are the offspring of Arab Strap, the gloomy Scottish band that successfully married pub-life pessimism to sharp indie-rock hooks. The new group began as an acoustic outfit inspired by the likes of dark traditionalists Johnny Cash and Nick Cave. Despite the band's clear lineage, however, Adele Bethel and Scott Paterson's desperate vocal duets give Sons and Daughters a refreshingly reckless sound. They've cleaned things up a bit for their most recent record, This Gift, but the result is no less super-charged, with snappy guitar riffs and bright choruses steeped in the glories of Nuggets past.
