Outstanding photojournalism should bring things that are out of reach into shockingly close range, and Seamus Murphy's exhibition at Asia House does exactly that. Between 1994 and 2007, Murphy captured Afghanistan as it changed from civil-war battleground to pariah state to frontier outpost for foreign troops, all the while retaining the probing yet nonpartisan perspective that makes his work a true achievement. As the Conradian title and haunting images such as Ghulam Ali, Parwan Province, November 2001 suggest, this is a rare glimpse into the Western world's new heart of darkness, a place whose people and landscapes are removed from the mainstream media's desensitising flow of propaganda and news.
