Art Showtime

Tonight, Gasworks' Showtime kicks off with a short history of performance, setting the scene for a week of events that feature the work of four commissioned artists. On Thursday (7 Aug), Rio de Janeiro-born, London-based artist Flávia Müller Medeiros teams up with actor Ben Lewis to take a fresh look at the much-chronicled life of Brazilian drag artist Madame Satã. Meanwhile, Laura Gannon looks to London's controversial housing project Robin Hood Gardens — an example of '60s Brutalist architecture — to explore the body's relationship with its surroundings. On Saturday (9 Aug), Ruth Proctor explores transience and repetition, and choreographer Nicholas Quinn brings words to life. A seminar led by Showtime's organisers concludes the event.
