Performing Arts: Theatre The House of Gingerbread

Tonight, the Arcola wraps up its preview of new theatrical gems destined for the Edinburgh Fringe. Benjamin Askew's The House of Gingerbread picks up on the Brothers Grimm's dark fairy tale and focuses on the gruesome elements — cannibalism, for instance — that are often glossed over in more saccharine takes on the story. Follow Hansel and Gretel, who have been kicked out of their house, as they do battle with a sexually frustrated woodcutter and fall prey to the witch's lure of candy and cake. Despite the bleakness of the plot, the playful verse has many comic moments — just don't go expecting Disney.
