Adapted from John Fowles' novel The Collector, the Arcola's Ben Caplan-directed stage version is an unnerving and unforgiving examination of human obsession. The action focuses on two contrasting characters — the beautiful and privileged Miranda and the withdrawn loner Frederick. When their paths happen to cross, Frederick becomes fixated on his new acquaintance and goes to drastic measures to cement the relationship. The staging and lighting add to the claustrophobic atmosphere, and, combined with the motif of Frederick's butterfly collection, heighten the play's disturbing climax.
