In his testimonial-led work, Peter Friedl creates new political and artistic discourses by re-photographing his collection of politically charged newspaper images in high-contrast black-and-white. Friedl's videos use similar techniques. His latest video piece examines the 1979 beating of Arthur McDuffie through a looping study of the Liberty Square Housing Project, a public-housing complex in Miami. In another piece, Friedl reworks Eugène Delacroix's Tiger and Snake by filming a live tiger fighting a stuffed snake in the same museum as Delacroix's painting. Friedl's work looks to raise political awareness through a re-examination of images already charged with meaning.
