American artist Juan Fontanive returns to Riflemaker for his second show exploring the mechanical image. Eschewing the digital media that pervade many contemporary-art shows today, Fontanive relies on a precursor of the moving image — the paper flipbook. He skillfully creates narratives out of individual hand-drawn images on hundreds of sheets of paper, which revolve on mechanical apparatus faster than the eye can see, creating the effect of animation and the film-projection process. The rotating paper creates a rhythm of its own in which the dreamy, almost subject-less, stories unfold.
