Martha Parsey's Solid Gold at the Eleven gallery is a set of oil-on-canvas portraits that explore the decadence of the well-to-do. A natural sequel to the gallery's previous show The Maids, this exhibition focuses on wealthy mistresses' casual opulence. The portraits' timeless glamour draws on Botticelli, while liberal use of reflective precious metals brings Klimt to mind. A Cologne-based, Central Saint Martins graduate, Parsey adds contemporary flair by leaving portions of each image unpainted or un-rendered. The unfinished beauties stand in haughty poses that hint at a secret tension: all that glitters is not gold.
