On the first Tuesday of each month, visitors enjoy the unique opportunity of exploring Sir John Soane's collection by candlelight, the way it was illuminated when he opened his house, 13 Lincoln's Inn Field, to students after lectures. Soane, a 19th-century architect, acquired artifacts ranging from books, vases, antiquities, sculptures, paintings and clocks, all of which can be seen today, thanks to his decision to turn his house into a museum for the benefit of "amateurs and students." Wander through the library, its mirrors reflecting the flickering light, and other rooms that house such curiosities as an ancient-Egyptian mummy case and a Roman statue of Diana, goddess of hunting and the moon.
