For someone who once wrote, "Basically, painting is total idiocy," German painter Gerhard Richter has not done badly with the medium. Widely regarded as one of the greatest living artists, Richter has a portfolio that includes Pollock-esque abstracts, watercolours and, most famously, painted-over photographs. For this latest exhibition, he has revisited his pop-art roots to produce a special second version of his 4900 Colours, a series of painted panels featuring vibrantly coloured squares that formed the basis for his stained-glass Cathedral Window in Cologne.
