Clare Woods: Monster Field

Clare Woods takes the British countryside as subject matter for her large-format enamel/oil paintings, but unlike Constable or Turner, she depicts desolate country landscapes in darkly sinister abstract shapes. Elements of Francis Bacon's deconstructed portraits can be seen in Woods' glossy, warped pieces. The most notable work in the show is Monster Field, which, at seven metres in length, dominates the exhibition with its austere mass. The drabness in Woods' paintings is sharply contrasted by flashes of fluorescent colour that adorn the sombre scenes, a strange vividness that speaks to the dreamlike essence of her work.
