Aesthetic Distance is the result of David Cotterrell's time spent at Camp Bastion in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, where he recorded the gruelling work of the camp's military hospital. Cotterrell's hard-hitting images capture the casualties of war — both solider and civilian — and the mortality of it all. Two films portray the aftermath of a major incident from different perspectives: highly focused images of an operating theatre and distance shots showing the transportation of casualties. Cotterrell's work is not for the faint-hearted and exposes the diluted version of combat that we have become accustomed to through mainstream media.
