The American artists Ed and Nancy Kienholz worked as a team until Ed's death in 1994. Although Nancy continues to exhibit, The Hoerengracht (which took shape between 1983-88) is the last major installation they created together. This evocative recreation of Amsterdam's red light district, in dense, sprawling detail, brings together all aspects of their oeuvre. Deft references to classical Dutch painting; a insatiable taste for discarded objects; a perverse patience for detail; and dark humor together ensure this controversial work is as fraught and visceral as ever. Related events include a presentation on the work's making and a lecture investigating the juicy particulars of Rembrandt to his favourite model.
