Richard Stone is an installation artist who has taken the contemporary obsession with death (popularised most notably by Damien Hirst) and developed the theme along much more interesting lines. This latest effort takes place over a single weekend, investigating that particularly British obsession with collective outpourings of grief. Reenactment of a Memorial invites visitors to bring their own unmarked bouquet of flowers and lay it in succession with others at Madame Lillie's Gallery. In deconstructing memorial from an artistic perspective, Stone hopes participant-viewers will engage with the idea of tribute as social performance — an often-unseen cultural desire to share emotion and experience a sense of belonging.
